| Expansion
of St. Mary’s to other areas in Nepal has been a slow
process because of the scarcity of personnel and financial
difficulties. However, the sisters felt the need of education
in certain areas. The repeated requests for schools paved
the way for the opening of St. Mary’s Schools in Pokhara
and Gorkha.
Pokhara:
In 1982, St. Mary’s in Pokhara was established. Though
it was a small beginning, it has now developed into a big
institution with many facilities for students. The hard work
of our pioneers, Sisters Scholastica, Rufina and Asha has
made it possible for St. Mary’s to be what it is today.
An evening school is conducted for those children who cannot
afford to go to a formal school and coaching classes for weaker
students who attend government schools.
Gorkha:
A seven room apartment served as St. Mary’s in Gorkha
in the beginning. In 1991, Sisters Rufina, Jyoti and Joyce
began their mission there. Life was not easy in a village
set up and yet they dedicated their energy in the service
of the poor children. New construction was made for the school
and now it has developed into a school with many facilities
and it gives quality education to the children of the locality.
Besides formal education, the sisters have started tailoring
and painting classes and a Literacy Centre for young girls
and women. Regular empowerment programmes for women are conducted.
This gives them an awareness of their rights and of their
worth as wome
Mary Ward Schools:
As a part of our mission, St. Mary’s
started outreach programmes for street children who were a
neglected lot. It was the dream of Sr. Aloysia to help them
to improve their status and to give them basic education.
Thus we have two schools, one in Jhamsikhel and another in
Lubhu.
